City Manager's Message

When I first came to Clifton, I saw a town full of hope and potential. The citizens are as warm, inviting, and involved as anywhere I have called home. The businesses are varied and active. The community cares deeply for the trademarks of our town. Together, this makes for an exciting position for us to be in as we grow and expand on the latest golden age of Clifton!
The City of Clifton is chartered under an administrative form of government known as the City Manager-Commission model. This means that the elected officials, or Commissioners, employ a professional City Manager to administer all of the day to day business of operating the City, as well as advancing the issues that the Board feels most important for the city’s future. The Board of Commissioners acts as the legislative branch of city government, while the City Manager acts as the administrative arm. All city business and departments are operated through the City Manager’s office.
The City of Clifton not only exists to provide police and fire protection, clean water and sanitation services, natural gas service, and recreational venues, but we also strive to improve the economy, safety, and aesthetic appeal of our community so that our residents are pleased to call Clifton home. The mission of the City of Clifton is to continually work towards making Clifton the best place possible to live, work, and play for our citizens, investors, and visitors. The City also has a vision to create unity among its employees, citizens, investors, and visitors through education and training to promote economic and physical growth by utilizing the most current technology and processes, as demonstrated by this new website.
I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the City of Clifton’s Board of Commissioners and citizens as City Manager since March 2010. Clifton is a gem of a city in southern middle Tennessee, with an extraordinary history on the banks of the Tennessee River. Prior to Clifton, I earned my BA and Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Tennessee. I gained city management experience through administrative internships and working with the Municipal Technical Advisory Service. City management has long been a career goal of mine and I am thankful to the Board of Commissioners for giving me this opportunity.
If I may be of any service to you, please do not hesitate to contact me at City Hall.
You will be comforted to know that in Clifton, there is still a place where visitors are always welcome and residents are happy to be at home!
Sincerely,
C. Seth Sumner
