Upcoming 2013 Civil War Sesquicentinnial Events

The City of Clifton will sponsor two Civil War themed events to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the war's influence in Clifton. In December 2012 the City hosted its first Sesquicentinnial event commemorating the 150th anniversary of General Forrest's crossing of the Tennessee River. The event was a huge success and featured guest lectures by Dr. Michael Bradley and demonstrations by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. For more information on the 2013 events, please contact City Manager Mike McClanahan at (931) 676-3370, or citymanager@cityoflclifton.com.

Spring Event

Saturday, April 13th, 2013, TBD. The spring Sesquicentinnial event will focus on the burning of Clifton by Federal forces as they began their occupation of the area. A self-guided tour will take visitors to several stops around the City. This event will be held the same day as the Spring Community Day and the Wayne County Medical Fair in Clifton. Tour Stop brochures are available for download below, and will be available at each tour site. Participants will receive a limited edition commemorative Sesquicentennial poster.

Saturday, November TBD, TBD. The fall Sesquicentinnial event will focus on the Federal stockade created in Clifton (near present day Stockade St.) and the rise of the Clifton Shebang Gang. The event will feature a guest lecture, as well as a visit from the Tennessee State Library & Archives to catalogue Civil War relics found in the area. Public participation is strongly encouraged for this event. This event is free, and is similar to events held elsewhere across the Tennessee, ( http://tnsos.org/Press/story.php?item=457.) More details to be determined.
