History
History is made every step along the way in a given area, and Clifton is no different. It started as a port town where boats would dock and offload goods destined for other areas of Wayne County for resale, such as Waynesboro and Collinwood. The ferry system carried pedestrians back and forth across the river since there were not many bridges easily available to gain access to the western shore of the Tennessee River.
The Tennessee River made Clifton such a valuable piece of property when the Civil War came to Clifton. Clifton is rich in Civil War history. There are markers in the town for the Civil War Trail, which expand on what happened here when the Yankees took it over to control this portion of the river and inland into Tennessee.
Men from Clifton fought on both sides of the war, and healing was not always easy afterward. But the men of Clifton answered the call of the Great War and World War II. Those brave men who fought are honored at our park at the end of Main St., where flags of our nation, state, and town fly today.
Today, we invite you to visit with us and stay at one of our bed and breakfast houses, or relax at the Bear Inn Retreat. You can enjoy water sports on this luscious portion of the Tennessee River, rent a boat at the Clifton Marina, park your RV right on the river, dine at the Marina, where there is even live entertainment on weekends and all during the summer. Enjoy good meals in and around Clifton, travel short distances to other interesting areas in this part of Tennessee, and even dip down into Alabama for some great musical experiences.
